About us: The story behind Bombillo Prieto
Bombillo Prieto literally means "Black Lightbulb", an idea that the brightest sparks often come from overlooked places.
The lightbulb stands for knowledge, the spark of finally getting it.
Proudly honors the Afro-Latin heritage that shaped culture, language, and spirit.
Founded in 2019 by Ismael Mejía Vázquez, Bombillo Prieto started as a creative marketing company. But one project kept shining brighter than the rest: teaching real Spanish and English to students around the world.
Today, we're a Spanish & English language academy: Latin American and Dominican Spanish for the world, and practical English for Spanish speakers. Real conversations, authentic culture, and an international community of native tutors who make every class count.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is full payment required before starting the program?
Full payment upfront secures your spot, your teacher, and your schedule before anything else is arranged. This isn't a pay-per-class system. It's a committed plan, and committing means both sides show up fully prepared. Spanish fluency is built through consistency, that's why we ask for commitment upfront. (Ref. Terms 01 & 02)
Can the academy change my teacher or class schedule?
Yes, and this applies to both students and tutors. With reasonable notice, we may adjust teacher assignments, class times, or formats (online or in-person) to keep things running smoothly for everyone. Continued participation implies acceptance of these changes. (Ref. Term 10)
Can I make up a missed class?
Yes, with at least 24 hours' notice, ideally made up the following week. Outside that window, an additional fee may apply. (Ref. Terms 02 & 03)
What if I'm late to class?
The class still ends at the scheduled time; lost minutes aren't extended or made up. (Ref. Term 06)
Can I pause instead of canceling?
Yes. Notify us via WhatsApp in advance and your remaining sessions are held until you're ready to resume. No partial refunds on paused plans. (Ref. Term 05)
Can I reschedule a class?
Depends on your plan. If available, the rescheduling fee is $10. (Ref. Term 04)
Are payments refundable?
Payments are final and non-refundable, except in exceptional cases reviewed at our discretion. Your payment secures your spot. It's not pay-as-you-go. (Ref. Term 01)
Can I share class materials with non-students?
No. All curriculum, recordings, PDFs, and the Dominican Spanish Dictionary are exclusive property of Bombillo Prieto Language Academy. (Ref. Term 08)
What happens if I want to upgrade my plan?
You can upgrade anytime. Just reach out and we'll adjust your sessions and rate to match your new plan going forward.
How do I know which plan is right for me?
Starter Speaker is best for beginners building a foundation, Confident is ideal for students ready to speak more and refine grammar, and Near Native fits those polishing fluency and pronunciation. Not sure? Message us and we'll recommend the best fit.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept Payhip (cards, Apple Pay), PayPal, Remitly, Western Union, and Binance.
Does the free trial apply every time?
The 30-minute trial is one-time per person; promo pricing only applies for the stated period. (Ref. Term 11)
What if something comes up and I can't keep my schedule?
Talk to us. Everything above is flexible at the tutor's discretion. We're here to help you reach your goal, not to make things harder. (Ref. Term 12)
